How the Kite Trips to Vella Island Works

Your adventure begins with a meeting point at De Silva Resorts at 8:45 am. From there, our boat takes you to a nearby island where the downwinder starts. During the ride, you’ll pass the historic Dutch Fort with its impressive Catholic church, endless mangrove islands and forests, spot a variety of water birds, see traditional fishermen laying out their nets, and even encounter large Sri Lankan Navy boats ensuring safety within the lagoon.

A dedicated rescue boat is always by your side to ensure safety throughout the journey, with a maximum of 6 riders per boat.

Around midday, our team serves delicious local specialties and fresh fruits directly on the island. Water and one soft drink are included to keep you refreshed. Between kite sessions, you can relax in the shade of traditional fishermen’s huts – the perfect spot to recharge.

The riding itself is limitless: explore flat-water lagoons, discover secret kite spots that appear around Vella Island, or venture out to the open sea where small break points offer fun wave-riding opportunities for more advanced riders.

At 4:00 pm, the boat heads back to Kalpitiya, and by 5:30–6:00 pm you’ll return to De Silva Resorts – full of memories of an incredible kitesurfing day. This trip is especially popular in the summer months, when conditions make it an unforgettable adventure.
