Learn kitesurfing in Sri Lanka at the Kalpitiya Lagoon

The Kalpitiya Lagoon is one of the best places to learn kitesurfing in Sri Lanka. The lagoon is large and flat, so beginners and advanced riders both have plenty of space on the water.

Shallow, safe water for beginners

At our teaching zones you can stand in the water, so getting back on the board is easy. The lagoon is an ideal training spot:

  • You can’t drift out to sea.
  • There are no obstacles on the water.
  • The bottom has no sharp corals.

Between sessions, you can relax in the shade at our beach hut. Our instructors and beach assistants help you launch and land your kite, and our safety boat is always ready to pick you up if you need help.

Real-time coaching with walkie-talkie helmets

Every new sport takes time to get a feel for the kite, the bar and the board. Many students find it hard to put beach instructions into practice once they are on the water. That’s why every lesson at our kite school in Kalpitiya uses radio helmets with walkie-talkies. Your instructor talks to you while you ride and corrects your technique as it happens. As a result, you learn faster and more safely.

Your instructor stays with you until you can ride on your own.

Kitesurf Lessons in Kalpitiya: Lagoon or Ocean

Kalpitiya offers conditions for every level. The huge lagoon has flat water, ideal for beginners and for improving fast. Experienced riders can switch to the open ocean. The wind blows more than 10 months a year.

Want to progress quickly or learn new moves? Book a private lesson or our Type C course for advanced riders. Walkie-talkie support on the water makes learning easier.

Kitesurfing Season in Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya has two kitesurfing seasons, with wind about 10 months a year:

  • Summer season (May – October): strong south-west wind of 20–25 knots, almost every day. This is the main season and one of the most reliable wind periods in the world.
  • Winter season (December – March): lighter and very steady wind of 15–20 knots, 4–6 days a week. This is ideal for beginners and relaxed freeride sessions.

The water is warm all year, between 28 °C and 30 °C, so you won’t need a wetsuit. Beginners can learn in both seasons. Only November and April have little wind. On days without wind, you can join a safari in Wilpattu National Park or go dolphin and whale watching, which is best in the winter months.

Kitesurf Downwinders

On the ocean side, downwinders start from Navy Point, Dream Spot or Baby Lagoon. In summer, a day trip to Vella Island is especially popular: remote spots with paradise conditions for riding.
