The Kite seasons in Sri Lanka

Due to the fact that there are two main seasons for kitesurfing in Sri Lanka you find 10 months of wind to ride the best Kite spots in Sri Lanka. There are months with strong winds and months with almost less days of wind. Just read all important tips here before you stay in Kalpitiya:

The winter season for kitesurfing in Sri Lanka

The kite season starts with December and brings stable wind until mid of March!

The wind blows stable from North-West with high speeds between 15-20 knots and meets the beach side on shore. You can be lucky with every days winds or just 4-6 days per week.

You can enjoy the view from the De Silva Windresort upper deck terrace and observe the kitesurfers riding 9-12m2 kites at the big Kalpitiya lagoon! The climate during winter months is perfect to escape the cold winters in Europe and other countries to get some new energy from the warmth. You can ride in board shorts and bring a lycra to protect from the sun. Just in case you stay all day at the beach side bring something warm to cover from the wet cloths in the later afternoon hours.

If you wanna bring your own kite gear we advice to bring 9-14m2 depending on your weight and kite knowledge. Of course you can also rent the latest North kite equipment at our water sport center!

The summer season for kitesurfers in Sri Lanka

Even though many places in Sri Lanka have their off season for travellers and tourists during the summer months, Kalpitiya is different. The area around Kalpitiya and Puttalam is called the so called dry zone of Sri Lanka. Which means that there are less rainy days during all year and during summer there is almost no rain at all. In contrary, during summer months the wind blows hard from South-West and brings sometimes high scores of 35 knots in the gusts. But usually you should count with 20-25 knots almost every day. Especially during May/June windsurfers are pretty excited to ride small sails while strong wind conditions.

The summer wind season starts in May and lasts until mid of October! During school holidays  (July and August) we always accommodate many families. Children can start with windsurfing from young ages (5-7years) and for kitesurfing we advice to start with 10-12 years. At the De Silva Palmresort you find a huge swimming pool, the perfect playground for kids and many different activities for all family members: table tennis, billiard, beach volley ball, pool bar, Ayurveda massage center and a lot more. Small kids love the sand around and are pretty happy to play all day free in both De Silva resorts.

For kitesurfers that want to bring their own gears – bring smaller kites 6 -11m2, depending on your kite skills and weight!

Is there an off season to learn kitesurfing in Sri Lanka?

Also of course our staff team that is highly rated by all guests, needs some time off as the main seasons bring a lot of work for them.
