Sri Lanka is a fascinating island state in the Indian Ocean. Visitors can expect a journey back in time to the past of colonialism in the middle of the tropics. Passing Buddhist shrines, ancient Catholic churches and bridges built by the Dutch, you can reach the fishing village of Kalpitiya from the airport after three and a half hours.

From there, a short bumpy road leads to the huge Kalpitiya Lagoon, with its endless number of different spots. Separated from the sea only by a sand dune, switching between slicing waves and rocking flat water is ingeniously easy.
